New poll shows division of opinion

Whilst state politicians debate and manouevre around the issue of online poker legalisation, Californian respondents to a new survey commissioned by the LA Times newspaper and USC Dornsife College appear almost equally divided on the issue, with 47% saying that they would favour such a development if, as lawmakers promise, it could raise $200 million annually for education, public safety and other government services.

Conducted jointly by polling companies Greenberg Quinlan Rosner and American Viewpoint, the study canvassed 1,002 registered voters from May 17 through 21, with a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points.

About half of the respondents said the spread of web-based gambling would set a bad example for young people and generate more problem gamblers.
